DHAKA, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Owing to incessant rain, the road conditions in parts of Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Saturday turned worse.

Roads, lanes and bylanes in parts of the city went under ankle to knee-deep water, causing immense hardship to the commuters and its millions of dwellers.

As always rickshaws emerged as a means of relief in many water-logged Dhaka areas that are usually buzzing with activity.

The main city areas appeared less crowded as people preferred to stay indoors.

Heavy rainfall left many roads and lanes inundated in such a way making it tough for commuters to make their way through them. Most three-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and taxis avoided the roads that are vulnerable to water stagnation fearing the risk of being stranded.

Dwellers in one low-lying Ahammed Nagar area at Dhaka's down town Mirpur-1 are seen even to use boats to navigate waterlogged streets on Saturday afternoon.

The incessant rain of days exposed as always the pitiable conditions of Dhaka's drainage system.

A depression over the Bay of Bengal has been causing heavy rainfall over areas in Bangladesh.

Under its influence, heavy to very heavy downpours occurred in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country throughout Friday.

The country's meteorological office said it recorded 149 mm of rainfall from 6:00 a.m. (local time) on Friday to 9:00 a.m. local time on Saturday.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department, however, forecasts a decrease in rainfall in the next 72 hours as the depression over the Bay of Bengal weakens and moves north--northeast.
