VILNIUS, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Remigijus Simasius, chairman of Lithuania's Liberal Movement, announced on Friday that he resigns from his duties as the party leader.

The decision came one day after Lithuania's Central Electoral Commission (CEC) stated that the Liberal Movement had grossly violated laws when funding its political campaign for the general election of 2016.

Simasius does not agree with the accusations.

"For a while, I have decided to step down as the party's chairman," Simasius, also mayor of Vilnius city, wrote on his Facebook.

"I agree that we need to more forward as fast as possible; in the current situation, I believe the election of the new chairman is necessary as soon as possible," he wrote on his social website's page.

Eugenijus Gentvilas, currently member of the Lithuanian parliament and first vice-chairman of the Liberal Movement, will serve as an interim chairman of the party, the Liberal Movement's board decided at the meeting on Friday.

The representatives of Vilnius municipality confirmed to reporters that Simasius would continue his duties as the capital city's mayor.
