Angolan leader returns home after handing over ICGLR presidency

LUANDA, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- The President of Angola, Joao Lourenco, returned to the country Thursday, after having formally handing over the rotating presidency of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) to his Congolese counterpart, Denis Sassou Nguesso.

Joao Lourenco participated in the 7th Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the ICGLR held Thursday in the capital of the Republic of the Congo, Brazzaville.

Under the theme "Fast-Tracking the Implementation of the Pact to Ensure Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region," the meeting reviewed the security situation in the region, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), Central African Republic, Burundi, South Sudan and Sudan.

The heads of State and Government have also discussed the measures in place to prevent the use of mineral resource to finance conflicts in the region.

The ICGLR is made up of Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, DR Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia.
