ACCRA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo on Wednesday launched a national digital property addressing system as part of efforts to formalize the country's economy and aid national planning and economic development.

Ghanaians have over the years become accustomed to using landmarks as the means of giving directions of the location of a property.

The "Blue kiosk," the "rice or plantain seller" and "that big tree at the junction" have become reference points for identifying locations.

"We are launching a solution to our location and addressing problems, and this will ultimately change the way we do things," Akufo-Addo said.

He said the project, born from a partnership of the Ministry of Communications and Ghana Postal Service, would give the country a trustworthy database of address.

Ghana, last mapped in 1974, lacks an efficient addressing system which has become a serious impediment to the country's development.

The location-based system will provide an effective means of addressing every location to facilitate the implementation of key government policies.

The app will generate a unique code for every property or location in Ghana, using the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology.
