SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were wounded Wednesday after troops of India and Pakistan fired upon each others positions and frontier areas on the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir, police said.

The two sides resorted to heavy firing and mortar shelling in Poonch and Rajouri districts, southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

According to Indian defense officials, the firing started in the morning and continued for several hours.

"Our troops guarding the LoC retaliated and gave a befitting reply to the Pakistani shelling," an Indian army official said. "The intermittent exchange of fire was continuing when the last reports came in."

Reports said several houses and parked vehicles were damaged due to firing.

The damage on Pakistani side of LoC due to Indian firing was yet to be received.

Over the past several weeks, the troops from both sides posted in the frontier locations are resorting to cease-fire violations and targeting each others' positions and civilian areas. The flare up has also triggered civilian migrations besides resulting into killings of troops as well as civilians.

It is unclear what prompted the fresh stand-off between the troops of the two sides.
