MOSCOW, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Pyongyang's public threat to use nuclear weapons against the United States is extremely dangerous, said a senior lawmaker from the lower house of Russia's parliament Tuesday.

A deputy ambassador of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to the United Nations (UN) said Monday that the situation on the Korean Peninsula "has reached the touch-and-go point and a nuclear war may break out any moment," according to an AP report.

The tough rhetoric in no way contributes to easing tensions, Leonid Slutsky, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian State Duma, was quoted by TASS news agency as saying.

The UN Security Council (UNSC) has imposed several sets of sanctions on the DPRK for its repeated nuclear and missile tests.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently signed a decree to implement economic, trade and technological bans on Pyongyang in compliance with the UNSC Resolution 2321 adopted in November 2016.

The signing of the decree indicated that Russia has never supported the "self-proclaimed nuclear status" of the DPRK and Pyongyang should not neglect the opinion of the international community or ignore UNSC resolutions, Slutsky said.

However, he added that the DPRK should not be provoked and driven into a corner.

"If military confrontation does begin, then there simply will be no winners or losers," Slutsky said.
