KIEV, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday submitted to the parliament a bill on constitutional amendments, which envisages lifting lawmakers' legal immunity from prosecution, the presidential press service said.
The draft law, which was designated by Poroshenko as urgent for consideration, is aimed at enhancing the fight against corruption in the country, said a statement on the Ukrainian presidential website.
The law means that the Ukrainian parliamentarians could face arrest, detention and criminal prosecution without the parliament's approval if they commit a crime.
Currently, the parliament decides through voting whether to strip its members of immunity if they cross the legal line.
If the constitutional changes are approved by the parliament, they will take effect on Jan. 1, 2020.
