CHONGQING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has demolished more than 100 illegal ports along the Yangtze River to help restore the river ecology and ensure the safety of water transportation.
Since June, 118 illegal ports have been discovered along the river and its branch rivers in 17 districts or counties.
Among them, 108 have been torn down, Liang Xiongyao, deputy director of the Chongqing municipal transport commission, said Tuesday.
The ports were built for illegal sand dredging and quarrying, coal loading or companies' private use for transport, Liang said.
Ten illegal sand dredgers were also seized.
The city will plant trees and grasses along the river bank to restore the river ecology, with the work expected to be completed by the end of this year.
