Brunei population records nearly 30,000 rise in 5 years

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Brunei's total population stood at 422,678, an increase of nearly 30,000 in the recent five years, according to the Population and Housing Census Update (KBPP) 2016 report obtained by Xinhua on Tuesday.

According to Brunei's Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) under Prime Minister's Office, in the 2011 Population and Housing Census, the country's population was estimated at 393,372. During the 2011-2016 period the sultanate's population registered an average annual growth rate of 1.4 percent.

The KBPP 2016 released by JPKE presented data on the population count as well as its distribution and growth by sex, residential status, district, age group and race.

Brunei's total population of 422,678 is made up of 216,832 males (51.3 percent) and 205,846 females (48.7 percent). The sex ratio is 105 males for every 100 females.

Out of the overall total population in 2016, Brunei citizens account for the largest share of 76.8 percent (324,472 persons), while the percentage of the permanent residents and temporary residents stand at 8 percent (33,816 persons) and 15.2 percent (64,390 persons) respectively.

The Brunei-Muara District is the most populated district with 69.3 percent (292,705 persons) of the total population, followed by the Belait District (16.6 percent or 69,992 persons), the Tutong District (11.7 percent or 49,438 persons) and the Temburong District (2.5 percent or 10,543 persons).

According to the report, Malays, with 65.7 percent (277,700 persons) of the total population, were the largest community in the country in 2016. The racial groups of Chinese and others comprised 10.3 percent (43,554 persons) and 24 percent (101,424 persons) of the population respectively.
