PHNOM PENH, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia and Singapore on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a political consultation mechanism in order to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation.

The deal was inked in Phnom Penh by Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and his visiting Singapore counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan.

"Under the MoU, the two foreign ministries will hold political consultations to further enhance bilateral cooperation in all fields and to exchange views on regional and international issues," Chum Sounry, a spokesman for the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reporters.

Prior to the signing ceremony, the two foreign ministers held talks on further promoting bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, education, health, tourism, culture and manpower, the spokesman said.

The two top diplomats also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interests and concerns, he added.

Balakrishnan arrived here on Tuesday morning for a two-day visit.

The two ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states forged diplomatic relations in 1965.
