DAMASCUS, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are fighting the Islamic State (IS) group in their last position in Syria's northern city of Raqqa, a source close to the Kurdish forces told Xinhua on Tuesday.

The SDF, heavily backed by the U.S.-led anti-terror coalition, is fighting IS in the city's local stadium, following capturing the national hospital of the city, deemed as the de facto capital of the terror-designated group.

The foreign IS militants are the ones fighting till the end. Declaring the city free of IS is a matter of time only, the source added.

When capturing the stadium, the SDF will control all of Raqqa, defeating IS in its main stronghold in Syria, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

This happened days after the local fighters of the IS along with civilians in that city evacuated under a deal with the SDF.

IS declared Raqqa as its de facto capital in 2014, after announcing their self-styled caliphate in Syria.
