6 killed, 30 wounded in suicide attack on police center in E. Afghanistan

KABUL, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- A suicide bomber blew his explosive device next to a police training center in Gardez city, capital of Afghanistan's eastern Paktia province on Tuesday, killing at least six people and injuring 30 others, a local official said on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, Hadayat Hamidi, the head of health department in Paktia province has confirmed that six dead bodies and 30 injured persons had been taken to hospital in Gardez city, 100 km south of Afghan capital Kabul.

Up to 15 students have also sustained injuries due to the blast, an education official Sayed Wali Jalalzai said.

A member of Paktia provincial council Alam Mir Bahram said that the militants conducted two car bombs next to police training center and the casualties could be higher than reported.

The attack, according to the Interior Ministry, took place at 9:40 a.m. local time and security forces are fighting to kill the attackers and bring the situation under control.
