CAIRO, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Chief Ahmed Aboul-Gheit called on Monday for intensifying Arab and international support for Somali security institutions.

In a press statement, Aboul-Gheit expressed support for the efforts exerted by the Somali government to defeat Al-Shabaab organization and other terrorist groups.

He expressed shock and sadness over the killing of a large number of people in twin bomb blasts in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Saturday.

The AL chief also welcomed the statement issued by the United Nations Security Council which condemned the bombing and backed efforts exerted to achieve security and stability in the African country.

Two explosions rocked the heart of Mogadishu on Saturday night, leaving over 270 people dead and hundreds others injured.

The al-Qaida linked militant group, Al-Shabaab, which has carried out similar attacks before has not claimed responsibility for the latest one.
