S. African stocks surge past 58,000 points for the first time

JOHANNEBURG, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) surged above 58,000 points on Monday for the first time, buoyed by resources shares and global outlook.

The all share index was on a new all-time high after it gained 0.5 percent to 58,163.56 points at close of session. The blue-chip top 40 index was high after it added 0.51 percent to 51,713.37 points.

The Industrial lifted 0.4 percent to reach a new all-time high. Financial stocks rose 0.12 percent following news of the Discovery was awarded a banking licence.

Among the stocks on JSE, BHP was up 1.63 percent to R251.95 and Anglo American 0.36 percent to R262.03. Kumba Iron Ore gained 1.22 percent to R257. Exxaro 2.31 percent to R147.56.

AngloGold Ashanti leapt 3.46 percent to R128.84, as the gold price rose to 1,304.29 U.S. dollars an ounce. Gold Fields was up 2.77 percent to R55.57.

Media and internet group Naspers added 1.66 percent to a record R3,253.

Lonmin was 2.83 percent higher to R15.24 and Impala Platinum gained 2.11 percent to R32.45. South Africa's Impala Platinum announced on Monday it would pay 30 million U.S. dollars for a 15 percent interest in a platinum project in the northern Waterberg region. Enditem
