BUCHAREST, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Some 2.5 tonnes of cannabis have been seized in western Romania, Romanian authorities announced on Friday.

A German citizen of Romanian origin, together with two Romanians, grew and maintained cannabis crops on four different plots at the boundary between the counties of Timis and Caras-Severin, said the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) in a statement.

The defendants chose an isolated area, with no access roads in the vicinity, where they set up irrigation channels and carried out periodic maintenance activities.

They gathered and dried the inflorescences with the richest THC content, after the plants matured.

Finally, the drugs were packaged and sold to various dealers in the country, but there are indications that some of the drugs were taken out of the country to Germany, according to authorities.

Members of the group traded drugs at 4,000 euros (4,700 U.S. dollars) per kg and the final price reached 10 euros per gram for consumers through several intermediary dealers, so the market value of the detected quantity of 2.5 tonnes is estimated at about 4 million euros, said DIICOT.

This is the second capture in a month, after Romanian police seized about 2 tonnes of cannabis on Sept. 29 from two Italians and three Romanians who cultivated cannabis in the southwestern county of Mehedinti. (1 euro=1.18 U.S. dollar)
