Georgian parliament overrules presidential veto on constitutional amendments

TBILISI, Oct 13 (Xinhua) -- Georgian parliament on Friday overrode the president's veto on the constitutional amendments and confirmed the country's new constitution which will come into force following the 2018 presidential elections.

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili Vetoed on Oct. 9 the constitutional amendments, adopted by the parliament on September 26.

According to the parliament statement, only eight members of the parliament voted in favour of the president's veto while 110 went against.

After the overrule, the parliament re-adopted the primary version of the constitutional amendments with 117 votes for and seven against.

"This is a great achievement, historical decision, our pledge to the voters that has been fully fulfilled," parliament speaker Irakli Kobakhidze said after the veto was overridden.
