Nikkei closes at fresh 21-year high on corporate earnings optimism

TOKYO, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Nikkei stock index closed at a fresh 21-year high on Friday extending its wining streak for a ninth day as investor sentiment was bolstered by upbeat retailers' earnings and on optimism for further robust corporate profit data.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 200.46 points, or 0.96 percent, from Thursday to end the day at 21,155.18.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 8.49 points, or 0.50 percent, to finish at 1,708.62.

Retail, air transportation and rubber product-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play, and rising issues outpaced falling ones by 1,206 to 723 on the First Section, with 101 ending the day unchanged.

On the main section on Friday, 1,847.95 million shares changed hands, rising from Thursday's volume of 1,536.27 million shares.

The turnover on the final trading day of the week came to 3,281.0 billion yen (29.30 billion U.S. dollars).
