Many Namibian rural families still without electricity: official

WINDHOEK, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Although 78 percent of urban households in Namibia have access to grid electricity, 84 percent of the country's rural households remain without electricity, an official said Thursday.

Namibia's Minister of Mines and Energy Obeth Kandjoze said this at the Climate Change Conference hosted in Windhoek by governmental and non-governmental organizations.

According to Kandjoze, the problem is being addressed under the Rural Electrification and Distribution program.

The minister said Namibia had made a commitment to attain 70 percent of its electricity demands from renewable energy by 2030. He said the country will reach the target in 2019 through a number of power projects.
