WINDHOEK, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Namibia said Thursday that it had decided to close certain sections of Bwabwata National Park as they remove the carcasses of hippos and buffalos that have died since last week's anthrax outbreak.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism in a statement said this was agreed at a high-level joint assessment meeting held on Wednesday.

The animals started dying on Oct. 1 in the park located in northeast of the country, according to officials. By Oct. 10, 120 hippos and 25 buffalos were confirmed dead.

It was also agreed that a vaccination campaign will be carried out against anthrax for cattle that are in close proximity to the park while livestock movement restrictions have been put in place in the Mukwe Constituency.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services will also provide prophylaxes to those who were exposed to the hippopotami carcasses and who are at risk of being infested.
