Indonesia, Laos agree to step up cooperation on defense, economy

BOGOR, Indonesia, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The governments of Indonesia and Laos on Thursday reached agreements to expand cooperation on the sectors of defense, trade, investment and energy.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo held a meeting with visiting Laos Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith at the Bogor Presidential Palace in west Java on Thursday.

Widodo said that Indonesia is ready to provide strategic products for defense system needed by Laos, including aircraft and other weaponries.

During his visit to Indonesia, the prime minister brought a number of business delegates.

"I welcome the business delegate joining the prime minister's visit. I am confident that a business meeting will help boost cooperation on trade and investment," President Widodo told a joint press conference after their meeting at the palace.

"Indonesian investors are very interested in investing capitals in mining sectors and fertilizer industry (in Laos), and I hope this plan can be immediately materialized," said Widodo.

During the meeting, Widodo said that Indonesia conveyed a plan to cooperate in battle against drug abuses and illegal trade of narcotics.

For his turn, the prime minister said that he was upbeat that both nations will persistently strengthen the cooperation in the sectors.

"On behalf of the government and the people of Laos, we express gratitude to the Indonesian government for its supports to us on several sectors and contribution to efforts to boost economic and social condition on Laos," he said.

Both leaders believe that the good bilateral relationship of the two nations which has been experienced for 60 years will give benefit for the people of the two nations.
