ISTANBUL, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed and two others wounded on Wednesday in an explosion at the Tupras Aliaga oil refinery in Turkey's western province of Izmir, local media reported.

Bayram Yilmaz, governor of Aliaga district, told reporters on the scene that the blast was caused by gas entrapment during the maintenance of a naphtha gas tank that had not been used for a long time, the Hurriyet daily reported.

"It was a workplace accident, no external intervention, no attack," Yilmaz was quoted as saying.

Yilmaz added that the production at the refinery continued as normal as there was no risk of a fire.

Turpras has reportedly an annual crude-oil processing capacity of 11 million tons.
