S.Korea wins top post in new shipbuilding orders in September

SEOUL, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's shipbuilding industry won the top post in new orders last month, with its backlog rising for the first time in 23 months, industry data showed Wednesday.

According to data compiled by the British-based research company Clarkson Research Institute, South Korea gained 1.46 million compensated gross tons (CGTs) in new orders in September to build 26 ships.

The orders included 11 super-sized container vessels, 10 super-sized ore carriers and five super-sized crude carriers.

China came next with new orders of 890,000 CGTs to build 21 ships, followed by Japan that earned 260,000 CGTs of orders to build 12 ships.

From January to September, China was the first in winning new orders equal to 5.09 million CGTs to build 217 ships.

It was trailed by South Korea with 5.04 million CGTs of orders to build 133 ships and Japan with 1.47 million CGTs to build 76 ships.

South Korea's shipbuilding backlog stood at 16.65 million CGTs as of end-September, up from 15.96 million CGTs a month earlier. It marked the first increase in 23 months since October 2015.
