PHNOM PENH, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Some 100 Buddhist monks from different countries gathered here on Tuesday for a week-long prayer for peace and prosperity in the world, especially in Cambodia.

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An and Cults and Religion Minister Him Chhem attended the ceremony, which was held at the Diamond Island's city hall in Phnom Penh.

The religious event was organized by the Association of Khmer-Chinese in Cambodia. Pung Kheav Se, president of the Association of Khmer-Chinese in Cambodia, said the prayer ceremony brought together 100 Buddhist monks from China, the United States, Canada, Australia and France.

"This is a rare Buddhist event and is the first time that Cambodia hosts such an event," he said, adding that a group of Cambodian Buddhist monks also took part in the ceremony.

Buddhism is the state religion in Cambodia and more than 95 percent of the country's population is Buddhists.

Men Sam An said Cambodia has 4,872 pagodas with 69,199 monks, and the monks have played a crucial role in educating people to behave well and to walk on the right track in the society.

"The prayer ceremony has clearly reflected unity and solidarity among the Buddhists," she said.
