TEHRAN, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Friday that the recent independence referendum of Iraq's Kurdistan region was a "strategic mistake."

Zarif made the remarks on the sidelines of the funeral procession of former Iraqi President Jalal Talabani in Sulaymaniyah of Kurdistan Region, Tasnim news agency reported.

Tehran opposes the independence vote recently held by Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government, however, Iran does not blame the Kurdish people for the mistake made by some of their leaders, Zarif was quoted as saying.

He hoped that all sides in the Kurdistan region would return to the path of the late Talabani, who was a symbol of Iraq's unity and territorial integrity.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Zarif arrived in Sulaymaniyah on Friday to participate in the funeral ceremony of Talabani who passed away on Wednesday.
