Tripoli, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- The municipal council of the western Libyan city of Sabratha revealed Thursday that 3,000 families had fled their homes because of the military clashes in the city.

"Initial statistics monitored by the Crisis Committee of the Council revealed that 3,000 families had fled their homes," The council said in a statement.

Aid will be delivered to the 1,000 displaced families with the assistance of the Libyan Red Crescent, the statement added.

Sabratha, some 70 km west of the capital Tripoli, has been witnessing violent clashes since mid September between rival armed groups.

The conflicts have so far killed dozens of people, injured hundreds and forced a number of inhabitants to flee their homes.

The clashes broke out after a member of an armed group affiliated with the city's military council was killed by the rival anti-IS operation chamber.

Following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Gaddafi's regime, Libya has been plagued with escalating violence and unrest.
