KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Up to 14 militants affiliated with the Taliban were killed following a series of counter-insurgency operations in northern Kunduz and neighboring Badakhshan province, an Afghan army official said Thursday.

"Security forces overnight air-and-ground operations targeted insurgents' hideouts, resulting in the death of eight insurgents in Imam Sahib and Dasht-e-Archi districts of Kunduz, and elimination of six others in Badakhshan's Kohistan district," Ghulam Hazrat Karimi, spokesman of army 20 Pamir Division based in the area, told Xinhua.

Taliban had not still commented on the incident.

The Taliban insurgency spreads from its traditional strongholds in the south and east to the once peaceful region in the north, where the militants have been recruiting from among the youth.
