KABUL, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) of donor nations opened in Afghan capital of Kabul on Thursday, to discuss progress and achievements in the country's development and reform agenda.

At the 2012 Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan, the Afghan government and the international community agreed to conduct annual high-level meetings to discuss progress on Afghanistan's development and reform priorities.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani would deliver a speech later during the event held in the Presidential Palace.

The last such meeting, the Brussels Conference on Afghanistan, was held in October last year in Brussels, Belgium, where the donor countries pledged more than 15 billion U.S. dollars in development aid for Afghans through 2020.

Afghan Minister of Finance Eklil Hakimi and the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto will co-chair the meeting.

Delegates from 40 countries would reaffirm their partnership and commitment to the country's long-term development in the one-day event amid tight security.
