NEW DELHI, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Four women drowned and three others were rescued after a boat capsized in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Thursday.

The boat capsized in River Rohini in Bagpat in Gorakhpur district, 285 km east of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"Yesterday evening a boat carrying seven local women capsized here drowning four women while as three others accompanying them were rescued by the locals," a police official said.

According to police, the women had gone to collect fire wood in the forest area on the other side of the river near Bankatwa village of the district.

"On their return the women had loaded the small boat with firewood which sank into deep waters in the middle of river due to overweight," the police official said.

Following the accident, local authorities rushed disaster management personnel to the spot to launch search for missing women.

"The search which was suspended during night has resumed this morning," the police official said.

Last month, eight laborers were killed when an overcrowded boat capsized in the outskirts of Indian capital city New Delhi.

In April this year, 13 people drowned after boat carrying them capsized in southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
