ARUSHA, Tanzania, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Fifteen people were killed and six others seriously injured after the lorry they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned in western Tanzania's region of Rukwa, an official said on Wednesday.

Said Mtanda, Nkasi District Commissioner, said that the accident occurred on Tuesday evening in a remote area known as 'Mbuga Nyeupe' involving a lorry, which was heading to Wampembe area in the district from Sumbawanga Municipality, about 1,388km from Tanzania's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

According to him, 12 people died on the spot and three others died at Rukwa Regional Hospital where they were rushed for treatment.

"It seems the driver was not used to the rough road. That's why he failed to control the vehicle," Mtanda said.

The District Commissioner, however, said that the driver of the lorry escaped soon after the accident.
