Foreign teams arrive in Uganda for Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 qualifier

KAMPALA, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Six foreign teams arrived in Uganda on Wednesday ahead of the Africa Rugby Sevens Championship which will also act as qualifiers for the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 and the Commonwealth Games.

Apart from the teams from Madagascar and Mauritius that have not arrived in Uganda, other national teams from Tunisia, Botswana, Zambia, Ghana, Senegal and Zimbabwe arrived in time to acclimatize themselves to the weather condition.

"We are happy that most of the teams have arrived in time for serious competition. Uganda will be more than determined to retain the African title and also ensure the team qualifies for the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games," Andrew Owor, Chairman of the Uganda Rugby Union told Xinhua on Wednesday.

Khalifa Nejemeddine, one of Tunisia's senior players said that they are aware of the task ahead because every game in the tournament will count.

"Our target is to win the trophy and also be at the World Cup. We have prepared well and expect good results," said Nejemeddine.

Uganda beat Namibia last year in the final of the same tournament played in Nairobi, Kenya earning them participation in the World Series qualification in Hong Kong, Cape Town Sevens and the Dubai Sevens.

The tournament will attract hosts Uganda, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Madagascar, Senegal, Morocco, Mauritius, Ghana, Botswana and Zambia.

The women's edition of the qualifiers will be held in Tunisia next month and the champions will qualify for 2018 Sevens World Cup.
