Conference to economically empower Pacific women held in Fiji

SUVA, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The 13th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women and 6th Meeting of Ministers for Women is currently underway in Suva, capital of Fiji, with a theme of being Pacific women's economic empowerment.

According to the website of the Pacific Community (SPC), which turns 70 this year, the purpose of the conference from October 2-5 is to bring together decision-makers within Pacific governments, development partners, research institutions and civil society organisations to share experiences, reflect on the progress and challenges they faced, identify strategic and practical measures and make recommendations to accelerate progress towards achieving gender equality and a full realisation of women's human rights in the region.

The theme encompasses employment in the formal and informal sectors, unpaid care work, social protection, impacts of macroeconomic policies, budgeting and financing for gender equality and women's human rights.

The conference is an opportunity to consider how the revised Pacific Platform for Action on Gender Equality and Women's Human Rights (PPA) and the proposed strategic objectives namely research and data, gender mainstreaming processes, partnerships, sustained investments, and accountability could accelerate efforts to promote gender equality, including the economic empowerment of Pacific women.

Members of civil society organisations (CSOs) and the private sector, academics and development partners are attending the Conference and Ministers Meeting.
