TAIPEI, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Two-thirds of Taiwan's female residents are interested in setting up their own businesses although few have tried, according to a recent survey.

Some 66.8 percent of the women surveyed by 1111 Job Bank would prefer to be their own bosses. They said it would give them greater time flexibility and higher incomes.

However, only 4.6 percent said they have already started a business, 7.7 percent are preparing to start one, and 6.8 percent tried but failed, the survey found.

Online businesses, specialty food and beverage shops were the most popular entrepreneurship choices, according to the survey.

Many women said they wanted to make more money due to wage stagnation and the gender pay gap in Taiwan, as official data showed that the median wage of female employees was 17 percent less than that of their male counterparts in 2016.

Taiwan had 508,701 female entrepreneurs in 2016, accounting for 35.9 percent of the region's total entrepreneurs.
