TRIPOLI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- General Omar Abdul-Jalil, commander of the anti-IS operation chamber of the western Libyan city Sabratha, on Tuesday survived an assassination attempt.
"The commander of the chamber was targeted by militias who violated the cease-fire agreement when he was visiting the battlegrounds to ascertain for himself the validity of the cease-fire," the chamber said in a statement.
No death was resulted from the attack. One soldier was slightly injured, the statement said.
UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj issued Monday orders of immediate cease-fire to stop the violence among the rival armed groups in Sabratha.
The city of Sabratha, located some 70 km west of the capital Tripoli, has witnessed violent clashes in mid September between rival armed groups. Medical and security sources said the clashes killed 26 people and wounded 170 others.
The clashes broke out after a member of armed groups affiliated with the city's military council was killed by the rival anti-IS operation chamber.
Libya has been suffering escalating violence and unrest since the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi.
