MOSCOW, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Russian warplanes, supporting Syrian troops on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, killed 304 Islamic State (IS) terrorists in the past two days, the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

Among the dead were seven IS field commanders of various levels, the ministry's spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a statement, adding that more than 170 terrorists were wounded in Russian airstrikes.

Russian jets destroyed a foreign mercenaries training center, killing around 40 militants from Russia's North Caucasus region.

The airstrikes also destroyed three command posts, nine strong points, eight tanks, three pieces of artillery units, 17 SUVs armed with large-caliber weapons and four ammunition depots.

Syrian government troops are carrying forward a major offensive against IS in the oil rich areas on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, the terrorist group's last foothold in this war-torn country.
