TIRANA, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Some 712 kg of cannabis sativa were seized on a speedboat in the Adriatic Sea during a joint Albanian, Italian and Greek police operation, the Albanian interior ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

According to the statement, the Greek border police were the first to inform Albanian authorities about a suspected speedboat that was allegedly transporting narcotics from Greece to Italy whereupon Albanian border police informed their Italian counterparts.

The speedboat was near to Otranto in the Adriatic Sea. Three suspected drug traffickers were arrested in the operation.

Italy remains the main destination of drugs cultivated in Albania and the Adriatic Sea remains the main channel used for illegal drugs transportation.

In recent months, the Italian authorities have seized batches of cannabis coming from Albania by sea. As a result, Albanian and Italian police authorities have intensified cooperation and information sharing in order to crack down on narcotics trafficking.
