COLOMBO, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena has formally opened a cable landing station that will connect the country with the latest submarine cable linking Southeast Asia, to Europe via the Middle East, a statement from the President's office said Tuesday.

According to the statement, the submarine cable landing station has been opened in Galle, in the southern part of the island.

The South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5) submarine cable system spans approximately 20,000 km whilst offering POP-to-POP (Point of Presence) solutions from Singapore to Europe via France and Italy.

"The SEA-ME-WE 5 is designed to provide upgradeable transmission facilities by adopting the state-of-the-art multiple 100 GBPS technology," the statement said.

When fully loaded, the SEA-ME-WE 5 cable system is capable of carrying 24 terabytes per second, the equivalent of transmitting around 4,800 high-definition movies every second, the statement added.
