MANILA, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The crime rate in the Philippine capital Manila continued to fall, a government spokesman said on Tuesday, adding that Metro Manila's streets and neighborhoods "are now safer and more secure."

Comparing the weekly crime volume in Metro Manila before and after President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office in June 2016, Duterte's spokesman Ernesto Abella told a news conference that "as of Oct. 1, 2017 robbery and hold-up incidents dropped by 39.5 percent, theft dropped by 35.6 percent, carnapping by 67 percent, and motor mapping by 63 percent."

Abella added that rape cases also dropped by 27 percent.

Abella expressed "hope that the marked improvement in Metro Manila's crime rate is likewise felt and appreciated in the entire country."

Metro Manila is the most populous metropolitan urban areas in the Philippines with around 12.8 million people.

Abella's statement comes as the government intensifies its campaign against drugs syndicates operating in the country, resulting in the killings of thousands of suspected drug suspects.
