KABUL, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- An Afghan girl student, Mariam Ahmadi, has won a prize at the United Nations WFP 2017 Global Children's Design Competition, said a statement of the World Food Program (WFP) released here.

"Mariam Ahmadi, a student at grade seven and her school were presented with a prize in recognition of excellent work, and was among 20 finalists chosen from a short list of 120 drawings by schoolchildren in 22 different countries," said WFP in the statement.

Mariam Ahmadi's drawing depicts her school experience in the western Badghis province, showing students sitting under trees and open yard due to lack of class rooms.

She received her prize from the head of WFP's Herat Office at a ceremony held in Qala-e-Naw, the provincial capital of the neighboring Badghis province recently.

Mariam Ahmadi, who dreams of going abroad for higher education, said, "I want to continue my study and go to Turkey for higher education," according to the statement.

Around the world, WFP provides food to more than 16 million children in school meals program in 60 countries, the statement noted.

Education plays a significant role in breaking the cycle of hunger, and WFP strives to reach the poorest and most vulnerable children, it said.
