ROME, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Italy's Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni on Monday expressed sympathies with the victims of a mass shooting in the United States that claimed at least 58 lives on Sunday night.

"Italy thinking of the victims of this horrible massacre," Gentiloni tweeted in the wake of the attack on an outdoor concert in the city of Las Vegas, "We stand with the families and the U.S. authorities."

"My thoughts go out to Las Vegas, a city full of life which I visited last summer, like so many other Italians," Cabinet Undersecretary Maria Elena Boschi wrote on Facebook.

The Foreign Ministry said it is closely following developments in Las Vegas in case any Italians were affected by the shooting, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Also on Monday, Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, was said to be "deeply saddened to learn of the shooting in Las Vegas" which he called a "senseless tragedy," according to the Vatican Radio.

At least 400 concertgoers were injured in the attack, which U.S. media called "one of the worst U.S. mass shootings."

The suspected gunman has been identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, who died at the scene.
