LOS ANGELES, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Stephen King's "It" reclaimed the top spot at the North American box office, defeating Tom Cruise's latest film "American Made" and Fox's "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" in a close race.

"It" brought in an estimated 17.31 million U.S. dollars, seeing its third No.1 in the fourth weekend in theaters in North America. Warner Bros. and New Line's horror film has earned 291.2 million U.S. dollars in total in North America and more than 553 million U.S. dollars worldwide.

"The film has been a juggernaut in the month of September and features a terrific cast of actors," wrote movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore in an email to Xinhua.

"The Industry finishes September with a new record for total box office revenue for the traditionally slow month and sets its sights on maintaining and building momentum as we head into the final three months of the box office year," he added.

Universal's "American Made" starring Tom Cruise opened in the second place with an estimated 17.01 million U.S. dollars in its debut weekend. The American biographical crime film is directed by Cruise's "Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman. Cruise plays Barry Seal, a pilot for commercial airline TWA, who became a drug smuggler for a Colombian drug cartel in the 1980s. In order to avoid jail time, Seal approached U.S. government officials and served as an informant for them.

20th Century Fox's action spy film "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" moved to the third place with an estimated 17 million U.S. dollars in its second weekend. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" is a sequel to "Kingsman: The Secret Service" released in 2015. The film franchise is based on the "Kingsman" comic book series.

Warner Bros.' animated "The Lego Ninjago Movie" landed in the fourth place with an estimated 12 million U.S. dollars in its second weekend.

Sony's reboot of science fiction psychological horror film "Flatliners" finished fifth with an estimated 6.7 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend.
