BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng on Saturday praised the contribution of China Welfare Institute (CWI) in promoting the welfare of women and children.

Yu, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks in a congratulatory letter to the first meeting of the organization's seventh executive committee.

Founded by Soong Ching Ling in 1938, the Shanghai-based organization focuses on maternal and child health, education and social welfare.

Yu highlighted the close connection between the CWI and the Communist Party of China.

The CWI should make itself an important force in developing the cause of women and children, promoting the reunification of the motherland, and advancing global peace and development, said Yu in the letter.

Soong Ching Ling, born in Shanghai in 1893, was the wife of Chinese revolutionary Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who led the 1911 Revolution.

Soong was a former honorary president of China. She died in Beijing on May 29, 1981.
