SYDNEY, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Australia's biggest pop culture event began in Sydney on Saturday with tens of thousands of superfans set to attend the two-day event.

Now in its fourth year, Oz Comic-con is an opportunity for gamers, film fans and comic book lovers to get together in celebration of their favorite characters.

For superfans and cosplayers, the convention provides a means to escape the monotony of everyday life and transform into larger than life superheroes.

"It's always a thrill to meet the fans!" Mark Meer, the voice actor who plays Commander Shepard in the video game Mass Effect, told Xinhua.

"And Mass Effect fans, I find are very creative especially with the cosplay... And it is a little humbling."

"You've got people that this game means a lot to, maybe it helped people through a difficult period in their life or they've just really connected with the characters."

Although Australia's Comic-con is not quite as big as its counterpart held in the United States, the passion from fans down under was evident, with many queuing up for hours to get chance to meet the actors behind the adored characters.

"It's nothing but love here... Australia has been incredibly open and warm," Fast and Furious star Chad Lindberg said.

"I've been lucky to have a few of those characters throughout my career."

"It's that magic!"

While the fun-loving event is a lighthearted affair, the Hollywood star said that at a time in the world with heightened political tensions, it gives people from all walks of life an opportunity to unite.

"I think it is imperative more than ever that people come out and be themselves and be happy... Go follow your passions and your dreams and forget about all the negativity, there is too much of it."
