TALLINN, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- President of the European Council Donald Tusk said on Friday that Europe must use the opportunities created by technological advances.
He made the remarks in a joint press conference with Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker at the closing of the Tallinn Digital Summit.
"We need to actively shape our future and manage the risks posed by the digital revolution to our societies and democracies," Tusk said.
At the same time, Juncker said: "This summit of Tallinn is an important step forward. We have to decide and to act quickly."
In the digital sector, he said that tax has to be paid where it is due, be it online or be it offline. While as to the cyber security legislation, a European cyber security agency will be established and this will be done in the next month, he added.
Ratas said: "We all agree that the digital revolution is here to stay and that the digital developments are transforming every aspect of our lives and our societies."
The Tallinn Digital Summit kicked off on Friday, organized by the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the president of the European Council and the European Commission.
The summit served as a platform for the bloc to figure out further plans for Europe to keep pace with digital innovation, and therefore to grab the huge economic opportunities brought by it.
Summit discussions focused on trust, security, e-government, industry, society and the economy.
In a press conference, Tusk emphasized member states of the European Union (EU) need to stay united as well. "First and foremost, I will do everything in my power to keep the unity of the EU," he said.
According to him, this is a concrete working plan for leaders to plan the launch of the permanent defense cooperation, a Euro Summit and a Western Balkans' Summit.
