ROME, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Telecom Italia on Thursday named a top manager from French media giant Vivendi as its third chief executive officer in less than two years.

The selection of Amos Genish came during a period of high tension in Italy over the influence Vivendi asserts over Telecom Italia.

Italian regulators argued that with a 24-percent stake in Telecom Italia and a big say over the makeup of the company's board of directors, Vivendi has de facto control over the former Italian state telecommunications monopoly.

The appointment of Genish as CEO just two months after he took over as manager of operations at the company is not likely to lessen those charges.

Regulators are deliberating this week to determine whether to fine Vivendi or require it to sell some of its share in the Italian company.

Genish will take over the company with more than 25 billion euros (29.5 billion U.S. dollars) in debt, slow market share growth, and increased competition.
