TEHRAN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Iranian parliament on Wednesday condemned the Iraqi Kurdistan's independence referendum, saying such separatist move is detrimental to Iraq and the whole region.
Iranian lawmakers voiced support for the Iraqi government in opposing the Kurdistan Regional Government's plan to secede from Iraq.
Any measure creating crisis in Iraq would harm the Arab country's democratic progress, the parliament said in a statement.
The Iranian lawmakers also urged the Iranian administration to promote cooperation with Baghdad to prevent what it called "Israeli adventurism in Iraq."
The voters in the Kurdish region and disputed areas in northern Iraq held the referendum on Monday on seeking independence of the region from Iraq.
The official results released on Wednesday showed that over 92 percent of Kurds approved independence from Iraq.
The referendum was held despite intense international pressure to suspend the vote, raising fears that it would spark a new conflict with Baghdad and powerful neighboring countries such as Iran and Turkey.
