DAMASCUS, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- At least 40 civilians were killed by the U.S.-led airstrike on Syria's northern city of Raqqa, local media reported on Wednesday.

The U.S.-led strikes targeted the Albadu street in Raqqa a day earlier, the latest in a series of airstrikes targeting Islamic State(IS)-held areas in Raqqa.

The U.S.-led coalition has intensified airstrikes on Raqqa to support the ground troops of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which has taken over 80 percent of Raqqa, the de facto capital of IS.

Activists in Raqqa reported large-scale destruction in the city as a result of the ground battles between IS and the SDF as well as the aerial bombardment of the U.S.-led coalition.

They say around 165 airstrikes targeted Raqqa over the past 24 hours.
