Volcanologist warns of intensified Bali volcano tremors

JAKARTA, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Volcanologists have revealed that a total of 829 tremors have occurred in the last 24 hours, indicating that Mount Gunung Agung in Indonesia's Bali could erupt at any moment, volcanology agency said on Wednesday.

White smokes with low intensity spreading 50 meters high above the crater has been detected visually, the agency disclosed.

Mount Gunung Agung volcano in Karang Asem district is in top alert and the agency has extended evacuation zone.

Early warning system has been set up by the national disaster management agency to give warning to the people for further evacuation when the eruption take place, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the agency said.

A total of five sirens with voice able to reach up to 2 km were set up near the volcano, he told Xinhua in a text message.

Meanwhile, the number of people fleeing home has climbed to nearly 100,000, according to the latest data on Wednesday, he added. That compares to over 75,000 people on Tuesday's data.

More than 200,000 foreign holiday makers visit Bali island, the center of Indonesia's tourism industry, every month, according to the national statistics bureau.

Mount Gunung Agung with height of 3,031 last erupted in 1963, killing 1,100 people.

Indonesia, a vast archipelagic nation with over 17,500 islands, has 129 active volcanoes.
