TBILISI, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Georgia is stepping up its efforts to ensure road traffic safety and improve the environment by resuming inspection for roadworthiness before a vehicle is allowed to be driven on the road.

Mandatory vehicle inspection will be resumed in Georgia in January 2018, said Georgian Economy Minister Giorgi Gakharia on Tuesday.

"Vehicle testing will be launched in January 2018 and will not be delayed for even a day. Relevant departments have been working on this project", Gakharia told local media.

According to the minister, the vehicle testing will be launched step by step and the inspection of all vehicles demands about one month.

By resuming inspections, Georgia is trying to improve the environment as possible, as vehicles are considered as a major contributors to air pollution. The vehicle testing is also expected to help reduce car accidents in Georgia.

There has been no mechanism so far in Georgia to check all safety parameters of vehicles after mandatory testing was canceled in 2004. Since then the testing on road-worthiness has been optional.
