COLOMBO, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will launch a national food production program next month in order to encourage food cultivation in unused lands, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said here Tuesday.
In a statement released by his office, Sirisena said his government would encourage cultivation on all unused lands in the private and public sector to prevent a food shortage in the future.
The National food production program will be launched to strengthen the agricultural sector in Sri Lanka, aiming to minimize the loss incurred due to the recent drought and floods.
Under this programme, the government is expected to cultivate lands and take steps to encourage those who are cultivating. Legal action will also be taken against those who do not cultivate as the initiative is considered as a humanitarian operation to eliminate poverty from the country.
