BRUSSELS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- NATO on Monday said it held a disaster management exercise in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

Disaster response personnel from 34 NATO and partner countries participated in Monday's exercise, according to a NATO press release.

In the next five days, around 1,200 participants will test international cooperation and interoperability in disaster response, including water rescue and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear detection, protection and decontamination.

Several international organizations will also be involved in the exercise, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and the European Union.

"This exercise will help improve international cooperation. It will give responders the opportunity to test state-of-the-art technologies in relief operations," said NATO Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, Sorin Ducaru.

This is the 17th international field exercise organized by NATO's Euro-Atlantic Disaster Coordination Centre and the first one hosted by Bosnia and Herzegovina.
